"Yoga is a light, which once lit, will never dim. The better your practice, the brighter the flame." - B.K.S Iyengar

The Iyengar Yoga Center is the hub of Iyengar Yoga in Vermont, located on Main Street in downtown Burlington. We are proud of our warm and welcoming space that promotes diversity and inclusion in a non competitive atmosphere.

Students love our dynamic, fun, and illuminating classes. You will benefit from the richness of the Iyengar tradition from the moment you walk into our friendly, fully equipped studio, that holds space for a serious, yet creative and engaging way of practicing yoga. We often hear how relieved students feel to receive in-depth instruction from our unparalleled teaching staff and how much they appreciate the attention to the depth of yogic philosophy and theory. From very new beginners to those studying to teach, your teacher is eager to meet you where you are. We have everything you need to practice so just come as you are!

At the beginning of each class you will be guided in chanting the Invocation to Patanjali, a Sanskrit chant which honors Sage Patanjali, the compiler of the Yoga Sutras, as well as honoring teachers who have come before us.

In this way we quiet and open our minds, and bring humility and reverence to our shared process of learning and inquiry.

Not everyone feels comfortable chanting and you are welcome to use this time for thoughtful reflection.

“I was on the verge of giving up on my yoga practice, until I began to pursue Iyengar yoga. The fundamentals of Iyengar, paired with the teacher’s knowledge, patience and dedication, have created a framework that I feel comfortable with. Iyengar yoga is inherently malleable, allowing people with chronic issues to integrate the practice in their lives, while maintaining active poses and not creating further pain or injury. I feel that I am working with and listening to my body in ways that no other approach has provided.”

What if I've never done yoga before?

Don't worry! Iyengar Yoga is an excellent way for beginners to learn in a safe, supportive environment. Classes begin with very simple poses in which foundational actions are taught with an eye towards safety and alignment. Your teacher may make suggestions for your particular concerns. Students with pain will often find relief in the very first class.

Those with more yoga experience often say they find the deeper level of instruction and attention very rewarding even in a beginner level class. Throughout the month we cycle through different groups of poses, ending the month with a deeply restorative practice and pranayama (breathing exercises).

Classes are creatively and artfully sequenced and no two classes are the same. Each class we learn about the body and its movements as a way of entering into deep inquiry of our inner experience. Iyengar Yoga is a safe practice that is appropriate for any body, regardless of age or condition.
